We have started our spring Term of Year 1 with lots of energy and enthusiasm! We are looking forward to exploring new areas of learning and will continue to work hard on improving our English, Maths and Reading skills. Please find information below about the topics we will be covering this half term.
This half term we will be exploring a range of fantasy stories. We will be writing about fantasy settings. We will also be looking at recipes and instructional language which links to our DT work. We will enjoy exploring poetry and will continue to work hard on our handwriting skills.
We take part in phonics activities daily and are working towards a secure understanding of Phase 5 sounds. Useful websites/apps to help practice phonics skills include: Phonics play, Twinkl phonics app, ICT games (try writing repeater and other phonics games) and Oxford Owl.
Our library session is every Tuesday afternoon. Children will be able to select a book to take home.
Our Maths problem solving skills are improving as we continue to follow the Maths-No Problem scheme. Topics we will cover this half term include: Counting and comparing numbers, Addition and Subtraction word problems, Multiplication and Division. Please see the Year 1 homework sheet for more information on our weekly focus.
Our Science work is focused around our body and we will be learning about our senses. We will also take part in nature walks and identify seasonal change in our school grounds.
This half term our work is History based. We will be learning about Castles and the people who lived in them.
This half term we are focusing on Food in our Design and Technology work. We will be designing and making a special snack for an important book character.
In Computing we will become ‘TV chefs’ as we plan and film our own cookery programme to teach others to follow a recipe and make a snack.
This half term our work will be based on the Easter story.
Our unit is based on games and learning simple tactics. This will included practicing throwing and travelling skills. We will also look at attacking and defending strategies in games. Our P.E. sessions take place on a Monday and Friday. Please ensure kits are in school for these days. Kits will stay in school until the end of half term when they will be sent home for a wash.
In the interests of safety, long hair must be tied back and earrings removed on these days.
This will be sent each Thursday. Please complete and return the Homework file to school by the following Wednesday.
Children will be allowed to drink as much as possible during the school day. Please send in WATER ONLY in a named bottle.
In Year One we have the opportunity to buy a slice of toast or drink at first play. Children may bring in 20p for an item, or this can be prepaid online or via the office. We always have free, fresh fruit on offer daily in class.
In the afternoon, children are invited to bring in a small healthy snack to eat at playtime. Raisins, fruit, a small chocolate bar or crisps are ideal suggestions. Please remember that playtime is only 15 minutes long, so the smaller the snack, the more time we have to play!
