Welcome back! We hope you had an enjoyable Easter break, with the sunshine and the snow!
Year 1 Homework
There is a new folder in our One Drive for some online homework activities for this Summer Term. Our main focus is reading. Feel free to have a go and email me with anything you do together.
This Summer Term will be 7 weeks long and our new topic will be:
We will be taking a trip around our planet, to find out all the weird and wonderful things it as to offer.
In English, we will be looking at stories from other cultures, including the famous book: ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We will be looking carefully at the language used in the stories.
We will then move on to creating a non-chronological report, all about Africa. We will use our computing skills to create the report, organising and typing up the information.
Our topic is very geography-based this time, and we will be finding out about different countries, continents and oceans along the way. We will look at how we treat our planet, and what we can do better. Our science learning will focus on the seasons ‘Spring and Summer’ and we will look at how things have changed over the year.
Our Art will be based on African Art and the colours and printing techniques to create different patterns, influenced by African Artists.
In R.E. we will be learning about Saints.

Useful information for Year 1:
We will listen to your child read as often as we can in class, so please send the books in every day. Reading books will be changed every FRIDAY until restrictions are lifted, then they will be changed twice a week.
Paper homework and folders will not be sent home as yet. In your Reading Record you will find two logins for online learning. Please login to these and try some of the activities they have.
Our P.E days are MONDAY and FRIDAY. Please make sure a kit is in school for these days. We only require a T-Shirt, shorts and pumps. Please make sure long hair is tied back and earrings are removed for school.
Shortly, our fruit will start to arrive and we will able to have it at morning playtime. Unfortunately there will be no toast available at playtime, but you may bring in a snack to eat at afternoon playtime. Something like a piece of fruit, biscuit or packet of crisps will help us get through the afternoon!
Show and Tell:
Unfortunately, we are not allowed to ask children to bring in any items from home this half term, but we can still have show and tell via email. If you would like to send in any photographs of special items, special people or days out please send them to me at:
We will share them in class on a Friday afternoon and print them out to display.
In Year 1 we follow ‘Maths, No Problem’ which is a scheme from Singapore. It helps us solve problems by learning many different methods and skills in mathematics. In this first half term, we cover numbers 0-10 in great detail, which means we know them inside out and back to front! We then move onto number bonds, addition and subtraction.
Children will be allowed to drink from their bottle during the school day. Please send in WATER ONLY in a named bottle. Unfortunately, we cannot refill the bottles once they are empty.
