Our final topic for this year will be…..’Tiddly Om Pom Pom!’. We will be looking at seaside holidays in the past. We will find out why people went to the beach and what they did when they arrived there. We started our topic today with a trip to Longridge library. We investigated the contents of a very old suitcase and found a treasure trove of goodies!
It was not-your average show and tell today in Year One. We had a visit from Evie Dewhurst’s cat, Ragsy. What a visitor she was! Evie told us all about how to look after a cat and what Ragsy likes to do. Thankyou to Evie’s mum for letting us meet her.
Our new Summer topic this term will be about the world around us. We will be using globes, maps and Google Earth to look at different places on our planet. We are learning about continents and oceans.
In English we are travelling to Africa, to read stories from other cultures. We will be using our voices in different ways to show the different characters and read the stories aloud. We will be looking at how the punctuation in the stories has an impact on the way we read.
All Stars Cricket
We had a superb visit this morning from the team at All Stars Cricket. They showed us how to use the equipment correctly and talked about what they get up to at Longridge Cricket Club. See the all stars website for more details about joining in.
As part of our topic, we learnt about life on a farm in England. We went to our local Booths store to find out what happens to the produce when it leaves the farm. Geoff and all the staff welcomed us to the store and talked to us about how they source their produce from local farms. Thankyou to all at Booths for a great visit!
In Maths, we are beginning the Maths, No Problem scheme. This is scheme based around the popular ‘Singapore Maths’. We will work in a very practical way, solving problems daily and working collaboratively with each other. This term we will be working in depth with numbers to 10 before moving on to numbers to 20. For more information on this, please search on the Math, No Problem website, their YouTube channel, or pop into school for a chat.
Our P.E. sessions take place on a Monday and Friday. Please ensure kits are in school for these days. Kits will stay in school until the end of half term when they will be sent home for a wash.
In the interests of safety, long hair must be tied back and earrings removed on these days.
Our library session is every Tuesday afternoon. Children will be able to select a book to take home. Please bring in a named bag (plastic or material).
Children will be allowed to drink as much as possible during the school day. Please send in WATER ONLY in a named bottle.
In Year One we have the opportunity to buy a slice of toast or drink at first play. Children may bring in 20p for an item, or this can be prepaid online or via the office. We always have free, fresh fruit on offer daily in class.
In the afternoon, children are invited to bring in a small healthy snack to eat at playtime. Raisins, fruit, a small chocolate bar or crisps are ideal suggestions. Please remember that playtime is only 15 minutes long, so the smaller the snack, the more time we have to play!
Each Friday, children are invited to bring in an item of interest from home. In order to give everyone a fair amount of time to talk, we have split the class into team colours. The team of the week will be on the homework sheet each Thursday.
Show and Tell will begin in the first week of each term, following this pattern:
Red Yellow Green Blue
